Avalokiteshvara, the Great Bodhisattva, in the Ekadashmukha Posture

Ekatashamukha Avalokiteshvara or Ekatashamukha Lokiteshvara or 11-faced Avalokiteshvara is another important incarnation of Avalokiteshvara that has been popular since ancient India, continuing through the Mahayana and Vajrayana eras. The oldest sculpture discovered appears in the Kanheri caves (Kanheri: कान्हेरी), Maharashtra, and is found in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist art in general.

The name 'Avalokitesvara' means the one who sees the world. He is a person of boundless compassion who always looks out for and relieves the suffering of all beings. The Chinese call him "Guangxi Yim Pu Sak", the Vietnamese call him "Quang Tu Tai Bo Dak", and the Japanese call him "Kwan Non Bo Satsu".

Avalokitesvara is a Dhammakaya Bodhisattva superior to other common Bodhisattvas. He is a unique being, similar to Aryamettrai Bodhisattva. He is related to only one more birth before attaining perfect enlightenment after Amitabha's passing to become the next Buddha in the Pure Land. While some sutras state that Avalokitesvara attained perfect enlightenment in the past, out of compassion he incarnated as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to save all beings still trapped in the cycle of suffering.
